#75 – 3 Life lessons I learned from a performance coach

Primero what is a performance coach?

It is only for athletes?

Well, for a definition you can read this article.

But for those of you who are too lazy to click the link and actually read: a performance coach is someone that can help you reach your full potential in a specific area of life, e.g. sports, business or your career.

Open your eyes to opportunities

Listen, the way I come across some of these events and people I follow, I just don’t know sometimes. I attended this free online event called From Employee to Creative Entrepreneur because why not? It looked interesting and one thing I love hearing is people’s stories. Hearing how people started out in their careers and what their journey looked like.

Clarissa Castillo Ramsey hosted the event and one session was with Colleen Biggs, a peak performance coach. Now, Colleen is a serious somebody as she has over 20 years of experience consulting over 340 business launches. Let me just give her some accolades.

Applauding a performance coach

At the end of each session, they gave away freebies. Colleen was offering a free 30-minute call with her to talk strategy or get any help with your business. Claro que si I signed up straight away.

Ask me if I knew what I was going to talk about in that meeting. I just knew I wasn’t going to waste time. I was not going to miss that opportunity. Especially a free one, please.

You are the best investment you can make

One of the biggest lessons I learned from the 1-1 with Colleen was how important is to invest in yourself.

A few weeks ago, I attended the Black Investor 360 finance festival where Tim Campbell spoke and mentioned that one of the best investments you can make is in yourself. He even said how LeBron James invests $1 million into himself every year! Me being me, I went to do research and found this article that confirms his statement.

Lebron James

It makes sense for LeBron to invest that much into himself, as he knows his body is his biggest and most valuable asset. It’s what he uses to make money, so it’s wise to invest in it to maintain it.

Okay cool, but some of us don’t currently have one milly to invest in ourselves.

Yeah that’s fine because no one is asking you to have that much money – calm down.

No one is asking you to find money to invest in a performance coach or even a therapist. But you can think about what you do have and who you know

Investing in yourself is subjective. It could mean reading a book, signing up to a gym or doing a free course online. The internet has so many free resources and there are too many free events you can attend, both online and in person.

In the 21st century, in this 2022, there is no excuse for not investing in yourself

Doing whatever pays the bills

Early in her career, before she became a performance coach, Colleen had 4 jobs just to have enough income to survive.

Started from the bottom now we here

Find something, whether you like it or not that, pays the bills. So you can continue doing your passion until your passion pays the bills.

You see this soft life lifestyle, if I speak.

I’m going to speak, anyway.

I’ll talk more about soft life in another post, but for now, I will say that you can’t avoid hard work in this life. If you want to be somebody, if you want to go somewhere, you better wake up and pay attention.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Wake up and do the necessary work.

Sometimes you do what you need to do (within reason of course) to pay the bills.

This scripture comes to mind: the craving of a sluggard will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work (Proverbs 21:25).

If you like, don’t work and see how long this ‘soft life’ will last.

Mastering fear internally

You become what you think (Proverbs 23:7); you can either use your mind to build yourself up or tear yourself down.

The way you master fear is all internal

Colleen Biggs

The next time you feel scared, ask yourself: what am I really scared of?

Then ask yourself why.

They are simple, yet very important questions. It’s when you answer these questions and really get to the root of the issue, you may realise the fear stems from an insecurity or a negative mindset. For more on negative thoughts and how to overcome them, you can read this blog.

Overcoming fear doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time and you will have to take a long hard look in the mirror and answer some uncomfortable questions.

Conclusion

To conclude, here are 3 takeaways:

1. Invest in yourself

2. Bun soft life and do the work

3. You master fear internally by changing the way you think
